The VAFP Fall Conference will be held at
Twin Lakes State Park on October 22 and
23.
Twin Lakes State Park will host a
Hospitality Hour from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00
p.m. Thursday night, October 21 with
complimentary hors d’oeuvres, tea, coffee,
and water. This will be held at the Cedar
Crest Conference Center located within the
Park. For those of us who prefer something
a little stronger in the way of beverage,
feel free to “bring your own bottle.”
Friday morning begins with breakfast at
the Conference Center followed by tours of
Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical
State Park,
Appomattox National Historical Park,
and
Twin Lakes State Park (click the links
to learn more about each park). A
complimentary lunch will be provided by
the Sayler’s Creek Re-enactment and
Preservation Committee, Incorporated.
After the tours and a rest break, a
hospitality hour will be held at the
Conference Center followed by dinner. Our
guest speaker will be Senator Emmett
Hanger, a good friend of the State Park
System. Senator Hanger was Co-Chair of the
Commission on the Future of Virginia’s
Environment, understands the issues the
Park System is facing, and wants to work
with us to generate support for increased
funding.
Saturday begins with breakfast at the
Conference Center followed by our business
meeting. Featured speakers Saturday
morning include Reed Johnson,
Superintendent, Appomattox National
Historical Park and Joe Elton, Director,
Virginia State Park System.
An important aspect of the business
meeting will be a vote on amendments to
the VAFP by-laws and officer elections. In
essence, the proposed by-law amendments
center on changing the structure of the
VAFP Executive Committee by reducing the
number of positions from seven to five.
Our lodging arrangements for this
conference will consist of a limited
number of cabins supplemented by a nearby
(seven miles) motel. Twin Lakes has five
two-bedroom cabins, each bedroom having
two single beds. A sixth cabin has a full
bed in one bedroom and two single beds in
the second bedroom. Also available is the
Hill Lodge with four bedrooms, each having
two single beds.
Given the cabin situation, we’ve
negotiated a cabin rate of $50.00 per
night or, if you’re willing to double up,
$12.50 per night per single bed. The motel
has agreed to give us the rate of $55.00
per night, the approved state employee
per-diem rate.
Nancy Heltman will once again
handle our cabin and campsite
accommodations. Please call her at
804-786-5057 and tell her your needs.
Given her schedule, you may wind up
initially talking to a machine but she’ll
get back to you. In case you do get
the machine, she said that you can really
help the process along by including the
following information in the message you
record:
·
Name and phone number
·
Say you plan to attend the
VAFP Fall Conference
·
Date you plan to arrive
·
Date you plan to depart
·
The number in your party
·
Accommodation need – cabin
or campsite
·
If cabin, are you willing to
share a bedroom?
The motel is the Comfort Inn in
Burkeville. The phone number is
434-767-3750. If this is your first
choice or if the cabins are no longer
available by the time you call Nancy,
please call the motel to make your own
reservation. Tell them that you will be
attending the VAFP Conference at Twin
Lakes State Park to assure that you get
the negotiated rate.
Given the limited number of cabins
available, it’s very important for you to
call Nancy if you have been assigned to a
cabin but later find that your schedule
will not permit you to attend. Someone
else can use the space. If you do not
cancel at least seven days in advance, you
will be billed for the space as though you
had used it.
With the exception of the lunch on Friday,
all meals will be at the Cedar Crest
Conference Center. Phil Morgan, Certified
Meeting Planner, and his staff have gone
out of their way to work with us on the
menus and the cost. The meal prices
are a real deal.
Click here to download a registration
form. Please complete the form
and return it with your check to Ann
Lipp, 401 Stonehouse Road, Williamsburg,
VA 23188. The Conference Center has
stipulated that since we have special
menus, they will need our meal counts
seven days in advance of October 22.
Please try to get your reservation form to
Ann as soon as possible.
